Installing a threaded check valve involves several steps to ensure it functions correctly and prevents reverse flow.
Tools & Materials You’ll Need:
Pipe wrenches or adjustable wrenches
Pipe thread sealant or PTFE (Teflon) tape
Clean rag or brush
Safety equipment (gloves, goggles)
Installation Steps:
1. Turn Off the System
Shut off the water, gas, or fluid line where the valve will be installed.
Relieve pressure by opening a downstream valve if needed.
2. Clean the Threads
Make sure the male pipe threads are clean and free of debris or old sealant.
3. Apply Thread Sealant
Wrap PTFE tape clockwise around the male threads (2–3 layers), or apply pipe dope/thread sealant if preferred.
4. Check Flow Direction
Locate the arrow or marking on the valve body that shows flow direction.
Important: Install the valve so flow goes in the correct direction (the valve prevents reverse flow).
5. Thread the Valve On
Carefully hand-tighten the check valve onto the male pipe fitting.
Use a wrench to snug it up, but don’t over-tighten—this can crack the valve or distort threads.
6. Secure the Other End
Repeat the process on the other side if needed (for inline installations).
7. Inspect the Installation
Check for alignment, ensure the valve is not under strain or torque.
8. Turn On the System & Test
Slowly restore system pressure and check for leaks.
Ensure the valve is operating (no backflow, no leaks at joints).
Extra Tips:
Use unions nearby if you want easier future maintenance.
For vertical installations, make sure the valve is rated for that orientation (especially for swing-type check valves).
Don’t install upside-down — some check valves rely on gravity to close.
