How to clean Entrance Floor Mat well

2025-05-27

Cleaning an entrance floor mat properly not only improves its appearance but also prolongs its life and keeps your home or building cleaner. Here's how to clean it thoroughly, depending on the type of mat:

General Steps for Most Entrance Mats:

1. Shake Out Loose Dirt

Take the mat outside and give it a strong shake or beat it against a hard surface to dislodge dust, dirt, and debris.

If it's large, hang it over a railing and use a broom to beat the dust out.

2. Vacuum Thoroughly

Vacuum both sides of the mat.

Go over it slowly to pull out embedded debris.

Deep Cleaning Based on Material:

Rubber-Backed Carpet Mats (most common entrance mats):

Mix mild detergent with warm water.

Scrub the surface with a stiff brush or broom.

Rinse with a hose or in a bathtub.

Hang it to dry completely before placing it back.

Coir (Coconut Fiber) Mats:

Shake and vacuum only.

Do not soak—coir retains water and may develop mildew or warp.

Spot clean with a damp cloth and mild detergent if needed.

Air dry thoroughly in the sun.

Rubber or Vinyl Mats (No Carpet):

Hose down with water.

Scrub with a stiff brush and dish soap or a degreaser if very dirty.

Rinse well.

Dry fully before reuse to prevent slipping.

Fabric Mats (Machine-Washable):

Check the care label.

Machine wash on a gentle cycle with mild detergent.

Air dry or tumble dry on low if the label permits.

Optional: Disinfecting

After cleaning, you can spray the mat lightly with a disinfectant spray if it's in a high-traffic or public area.

Maintenance Tips

Clean mats weekly in high-traffic areas.

Deep clean monthly or as needed.

Rotate mats occasionally to wear them evenly.
